Diamond has been found in five of the 15 new kimberlite pipes in India’s Panna and Chhatarpur districts, recent exploration surveys showed, the Press Trust of India reported.
The report quoted unnamed mining department officials as saying the government was in the process of issuing a prospecting lease to the companies for diamonds in the districts. The officials said Rio Tinto Exploration had been issued a reconnaissance permit after it claimed to have discovered the diamond presence in the kimberlites. In September, India’s Minister of State for Mines, T. Subbarami Reddy, said India plans to phase out its imports of diamonds and gold to zero within the next decade, as it works to encourage exploration of the minerals in the nation`s five gold and diamond mining states. The minister estimated that India has about 9 percent of the world`s total gold reserves. |
